Learning from the Past – California’s Landmark Decisions
The speakers will discuss the pivotal cases that impact how community associations are managed. The cases will run the gamut, including cats, personal injuries, violent attacks, termites and delinquencies. Concepts like the business judgment decisions and the meaning of fiduciary duty will be explored, allowing the audience to predict the outcome of the case based upon the facts presented. Community managers will walk away with the tools to relate case law to their day-to-day jobs.
Special Guest Speakers:
Denise Iger, Esq. is a partner of the law firm Iger, Wankel, Bonkowski LLP. Ms. Iger has served as general legal counsel to hundreds of homeowners associations throughout Southern California for more than 20 years. She served as a Director for the Orange County Chapter for six years and Vice President for four years. For many years, Denise chaired the Chapter’s Publication Committee and has served on the committee for over fifteen years, as well as other committees of the Chapter. She is the recipient of a number of this Chapter’s most prestigious awards, including the May Russell Lifetime Achievement Award and Speaker of the Year.
James R. McCormick, Jr., CCAL, is a managing partner in the Law Firm of Peters & Freedman, L.L.P. Since starting in the industry in 1996, James has served on various industry committees, has presented at countless events and has published many industry-related articles. As a result of his work in this industry, James is one of approximately 150 attorneys nationwide to be granted a fellowship in the CAI College of Community Association Lawyers (CCAL). James is passionate about teaching and has created training programs for managers and Board members in San Diego, Coachella Valley, Orange County, Los Angeles County and the Inland Empire.
Steven J. Tinnelly, Esq. has been a member of the California State Bar since 2010 and is the Managing Shareholder of Tinnelly Law Group. Prior to joining our firm, Mr. Tinnelly worked in the litigation departments of midsize and multi-national corporate law firms. Mr. Tinnelly is very active within the community association industry and devotes much of his time to educating homeowners and industry professionals about the legal issues affecting community associations. He currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Orange County chapter of the Community Associations Institute (CAI).
