The Chapter Symposium & Expo

The Chapter Symposium & Expo has the largest statewide community manager and HOA board member attendance.  This year’s symposium combines outstanding educational sessions with a large trade-show.

Educational Sessions:

Insurance - Practices & Pitfalls
Speakers: Jean M. Moriarty, Esq. of Berding | Weil, LLP & Patrick Prendiville, CIRMS of Prendiville Insurance Agency
The claim – timing is everything.  Reservation of rights – riddle The role of insurance defense counsel. Does the association need its own general legal counsel?  When, Where and Why?

HOA Fair Housing Issues
Speakers:  Brittany Ketchum, Esq. of Beaumont Tashjian and Janet L.S. Powers, Esq., CCAL of Fiore, Racobs & Powers, A PLC
From peacocks to squirrels, assistance animals are in the news all the time!  Is your association ready to handle requests from a menagerie?  Disabled parking spaces may be requested by your association’s residents to accommodate a disability.  Do you know what to do when you receive a request for a parking space?
The California Department of Fair Employment and Housing (DFEH) is in the process of adopting new Regulations on Fair Housing, including reasonable accommodations of disabilities, requests for assistance animals and other important issues that may impact your association.
This Session will help you successfully address Fair Housing questions and problems at your association
Navigating the Wonderful World of Marijuana
Speakers:  Laurisa Ehlers of Crummack Huseby Property Management, Inc. & David Wankel, Esq. of Iger Wankel & Bonkowski, LLP
Recreational use of marijuana is now legal under California Law. Although legal since November of 2016, licensed dispensaries are now open to the public and use is becoming much more widespread and mainstream. So are complaints and issues related to the smoke. It is important that managers understand the issues as the product becomes readily available. This session will initially describe what marijuana is, including strains, cultivation, ingestion, cost and the mass appeal of the drug. The speakers will explain the history of the regulation in California followed by the current state of the law. The speakers will discuss how California law is in conflict with federal law and what this might mean to the general public. And finally, the speakers will address regulations with homeowners associations and special issues, such as commercial farming and how the legalization of marijuana impacts the need to accommodate those with disabilities.
The Board Whisperers
Speakers:  Ramona Acosta, CMCA, AMS, PCAM of Tinnelly Law Group & Shanne Ho, PCAM of ProActive Professional Management
You’ve just been elected on your Board of Directors – now what? Or maybe you have been serving as a volunteer board member for some time and you just aren’t sure which way is up. If you have been dazed and confused but still have a passionate heart to do the right thing in the best interest of your community, then there may be some myths that need to be debunked. Learn how to navigate through conflict, financial tough spots, working with your service providers, noncompliance issues, homeowner requests, day-to-day operations, and strategic planning. Changing how you do business with helpful tips will help enhance your board volunteer experience!
Bucking the Trends—Impact of Legislation
Speakers:  Morgen Hardigree of Optimum Professional Property Management, Inc. (ACMF) & Matt D. Ober, Esq., CCAL of Richardson | Ober PC
The ever-increasing micromanagement of community associations through state and federal legislation has impacted significantly how our local communities govern effectively.  From short term rentals to free speech to clotheslines, community association leaders and managers are forces to maneuver through a maze of legislation that challenges the way they manage, maintain and govern.  This growing trend challenges communities not only to adapt quickly to increasing legislative mandates but also to be proactive in modifying their community governance structure to comply with the new legislation.  This session will highlight these trends and discuss effective ways directors and managers can prepare their communities to handle not only the new laws, but the legislation on the horizon
10 Things Your Reserve Analyst Never Told You
Speakers:  Scott Clements, RS of Reserve Studies, Inc. & Bree Harrington, CMCA of Powerstone Property Management
Reserve contributions are an influential part of an HOA budget; ever wonder how they are prepared? How they can be modified? What issues determine the final recommendations? What HOA’s can, and cannot, do to adjust the recommendations? Come join us for an interactive program that identifies the most influential aspects of reserve study reports, and what mangers and board members can provide to insure the report is comprehensive, accurate, and reflective of the HOA’s unique circumstances.
